What’s Happening In Bayelsa? IG Sends 7th Police Boss To The State In Just 4 Months

A new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Joseph Mukan, has been posted to Bayelsa State, making him the seventh CP in the state in less than four months.

The frequent changes of CPs in the state triggered outrage with top government officials claiming that the developments were being influenced by politics.
The ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state questioned Mukan’s appointment barely a month after Ebere Onyeagoro was posted to the state as CP.

The state chairman of the PDP, Cleopas Moses, in a statement, said the posting of CPs to Bayelsa had been politicised.

He pointed the finger at the leaders of the opposition in the state, claiming they were responsible for the state having seven CPs in the last four months.

He alleged that their aim was to instil fear in the citizenry and create the impression that the opposition would use security agencies to take over the state in the upcoming elections.

Governor Seriake Dickson, who spoke during the reception of some All Progressives Congress leaders on Thursday, said the frequent changes of CP in the state were geared towards favouring the opposition ahead of the 2019 general elections.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, said in a statement Mukan was posted to the state to take over from Onyeagoro, who has been redeployed to the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abuja, as CP Special Fraud Unit.

Butswat said, “Until his present posting, Mukan was the Commissioner of Police, SFU, Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Abuja.

“He is a disciplinarian and a professional police officer, who has served in various commands and formations in various capacities.”

The police spokesman solicited the cooperation of the people of Bayelsa State.

He urged the public to support the new Commissioner of Police to discharge his duties of maintaining law and order in the state.
