Porsha Owens, 28, was preparing to take her children to a summer child care program at 7:15 a.m. Monday. 18 year old Mark Haywood allegedly came from behind Owens’ car and announced he was going to rob her. With a shirt over his head, the would be carjacker demanded to Owens: “Give me your money and your car keys” — When Owens refused, he shot her. After he failed to start the car he fled on foot. Owens’ eight-year-old son grabbed his siblings—a five-year-old sister and three-year-old brother—and hid under the car. The boy saw police coming and waved them over to the crime scene where he mother laid on the ground.The brave eight-year-old boy saw his mother get shot to death but his quick thinking to hide his siblings likely saved their lives. Owens was transported to a local hospital where she died from a single gunshot wound.
On Wednesday, Mark Haywood was arrested and charged with one count of murder in the second-degree, one count of first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action. Haywood is being held in lieu of $1 million cash bond.
Owens was a safety officer at the Riverview Gardens School District, which remembered her as a “treasured member” of their community and someone “who worked diligently to build positive relationships with scholars and staff.” Owens’ family has created a GoFundMe page to help support her three children.
