Jonjo Shelvey has been ruled out of Newcastle United’s clash at Liverpool.
The Toon midfielder will be absent on the return to his old club after picking up a knee injury last weekend at Bournemouth. Shelvey now faces further scans but his omission means Rafa Benitez has to rethink his midfield options at Anfield.
Speaking before the game, Benitez said: “ Jonjo Shelvey has a knock to his knee and he will not be available.
“We are waiting on the results of the scans. We don’t know how serious it is. He wants to train and play but we have to check.”
Benitez was forced to take off Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie due to slight concerns at Bournemouth last weekend.
Islam Slimani is still out and providing an update on his influential pair of summer signings from 2016, Benitez said: “Islam Slimani will continue to work with the physios and fitness coach in the gym. Dwight Gayle is the other one but he is fine. Ritchie is fine and the others are ok.”
Benitez also hopes that United can learn from their experiences last weekend.
He added: “Watching the Bournemouth game on video, we had so many chances to finish the game. We have to learn from that and learn how to manage games when we are in these positions.”
