When was the first Slurpee? 7-Eleven has been hosting Free Slurpee Day since 2002. But the Slurpee has been sold for much longer. Developed in the 1950s, the frozen drinks were born when Omar Knedlik’s Dairy Queen soda fountain broke and he put the soda in the freezer, turning it slushy. The drinks were first sold as Icees before being rebranded when they were sold by 7-Eleven in the 1960s, renamed after the sound people made when they drank them, and officially introduced to the convenience store chain in 1966.
