Daily Trust North East Regional Editor, Uthman Abubakar, who was arrested by soldiers who invaded premises of the organisation in Maiduguri, has been released.

He was released more than 48 hours after he was picked up with a reporter during the invasion over a story the army considered injurious to national security.

Abubakar was released Tuesday afternoon in Maiduguri by the military having been detained since Sunday.

His arrest and detention, according to the army, was due to a publication by Daily Trust Newspapers alleging breach of secret information relating to military operation in the North East which he was said to have co-written.

Abubakar informed his mobile devices, including phone and laptop, were still with the military who promised to release them after more forensic combing by experts.

He also informed he was not maltreated by the soldiers, who he said treated him courteously throughout the incarceration.

The Editor-in-Chief of Daily Trust, Mannir Dan-Ali, also confirmed release of Abubakar.

Dan-Ali said he spoke with Usthman shortly after he was released.

He informed Abubakar was brought back to the Maiduguri office by an unnamed Major who handed him over to a Security officer at the office.

“Uthman who maintains that he was courteously treated however said his mobile phones and laptop are still with the military.

“They told him that they need time to finish the forensic checks they are carrying out on the equipment,” he informed.
