The Akwa Ibom state commissioner of police, CP Musa Kimo had disclosed that the state police command expected to be commended for efforts made to contain the crisis which rocked the State House of Assembly recently and forestalling further breakdown of law and order.
Kimo, who disclosed this in a statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Odiko MacDon, said instead of getting commendation, it was villification that came their way.
Explaining the efforts of the police to arrest the Assembly crisis on Monday 19th November and Tuesday 27th November respectively, the police commissioner said, “Consequent upon the tension in and around the state house of Assembly complex. the Akwaibom state police command took a proactive step by deploying personnel around the complex. This measure went a long way to prevent the assembly complex from being burnt and vandalized and ensured that no life was lost.
“on Tuesday 27th November, 2018, based on intelligence report of an impending further crisis, the command in order to forestall breakdown of law and order deployed personnel 500 metres away from the Assembly and screened all those wanting to enter the Assembly complex. The essence of this was to ensure that hoodlums do not enter the assembly whenever the house sits.”
“The first to arrive the Assembly complex were five APC lawmakers as at this time the CP was in his office when he got a call inviting him to government house to see the governor.
“He quickly left his office to see the governor, but on arrival he was informed that the governor had left for the Assembly complex. He proceeded to the House of Assembly complex where he met with the governor, some commissioners and PDP lawmakers.
“The lawmakers later met and performed their legislative function after the restoration of normalcy within and around the Assembly complex by the Nigerian police.”
He maintained that the police were non-partisan and professional and would remain so in their dealings with the people and government of the state, urging Akwa Ibom people to eschew the blame game and partner with the police and other sister security organisations to make Akwa Ibom the most peaceful state.
He further urged the Akwa Ibom people to remain calm and law abiding, assuring that the police would not be derailed from performing its constitutional duties of protecting lives and property and maintenance of law and order.
